Goodbye Sonos, Hello Airplay!

I just updated my iPad and iPhone to iOS 4.2. Now I can stream Spotify music from my iPhone and iPad to different rooms in my house. Now I can enjoy my music in my living room on my home stereo, not just in the den, where my computer sits. You can too. Here’s how it works:

iPad/iPhone/Spotify/Airport Express/HiFi

iPad/iPhone/Spotify/Airport Express/HiFi

First, you need to make sure you have the following items:

  • WiFi connection
  • iPhone and/or iPad updated to iOs 4.2 or higher
  • Spotify (Premium) account
  • Apple Airport Express
  • Optical or analog audio cable
  • HiFi receiver with “optical in”

Make sure you connect the Airport express via the optical/analog audio cable to your HiFi/receiver and select the input selector for the optical/analog input.

Now, go to the Spotify app on your iPhone or iPad. Choose the song or album you want to play. Then double click the home button and scroll left to the music player. Here you can select the Airplay button (the one with the square icon) that should display the various output choices.

The sound quality is amazing. Spotify Premium members deserve premium sound quality. To be precise, you can stream music at a higher bitrate of up to 320kbps on your iPad/iPhone. That’s some serious high-fidelity listening coming your way!

This setup costs approximately EUR 600 (EUR 499 for the iPad and EUR 89 for the Airport Express and an optical cable can be bought for less than EUR 10). Much cheaper than setting up a Sonos system from scratch. Goodbye Sonos, hello Apple Airplay!

  1. Hi Oscar,

I couldn’t agree more – very cost effective indeed. :)

Just ordered the airport express so that I can properly enjoy my Spotify premium account. Can’t wait.

    Thanks,
    R.

  2. Hallo Oscar, intressant artikel. Werkt dit met elk simpel Hifi setje?

    Groet.

    • The airport express works with both an analog/optical audio jack. So every hifi set with some external inputs should be compatible.

  3. I still prefer the Russian way… have a single big system, max out bass, then let everyone in the house enjoy your music :)

Though I do find streaming audio and/or video one of the best inventions since games.

  4. For those who want to achieve the same thing on their macbook’s – you can run Airfoil. Works great but will set you back 25 euro.
